Personality & Traits
General Overview | Simone is an idealistic yet pragmatic person, driven by a sincere belief in the Federation's mission of exploration and inter-species cooperation. Though raised in an influential corporate family, her father's death opened her eyes to the galaxy's dangers and drew her to Starfleet's aspirational principles against her family's expectations. Her decades of diplomatic experience, bridging her corporate upbringing with political science training, have tempered her idealism with calculated realpolitik without sacrificing courage of her convictions. Sociable by nature yet highly capable, Simone always attempts to balance her ideals with the experience she's garnered over the years that required her to find pragmatic solutions to complex situations. |
History
Personal History | Simone Langford was born in 2357 in Idalia on Venteris Prime, an independent world located on the edge of the Azure Nebula. Her family were influential stakeholders in the Venteris Corporation, a megacorporation that had de facto rule over the corporate republic known as the Venteris Corporate Union. Tiago Langford, Simone’s father, was a member of the Directorate Assembly, the legislative branch of Venteris that oversaw the governance of Venteris Prime under the leadership of the Director-General. Simone’s mother, Gillian, served as the executive director for Venteris Biomedical, a subsidiary of the megacorporation in charge of the majority of the planet’s health services. Simone spent most of her childhood on Venteris Prime where her family was based. She grew up alongside the siblings of the Misrahi family - also highly influential stakeholders in the Venteris Corporation - and was especially close with Nala Misrahi, the youngest daughter of the Misrahi family who was similar to her own age. In 2369, following the recent Borg incursion in the region a few years prior, Venteris sought to become a Federation protectorate. Simone’s father participated in the talks but was assassinated by suspected Orion Syndicate members along with the Director-General. Talks with the Federation stalled and Venteris instead pursued the development of its own defences as a result. Simone was twelve years old at the time of her father’s death and it affected her deeply. She became truly aware for the first time of the danger of the galaxy she lived in. At the same time, it was also her first encounter with Starfleet and her eyes were opened to the ideals of the Federation. Not long afterwards, in 2370, her mother was appointed as the Venteris envoy to Coridan, and Simone moved with her mother. Simone was enrolled at a prestigious school on Coridan where her education had a strong focus on political science and law. It was during this time that she befriended the son of a Starfleet commander stationed on Coridan, with whom she became romantically involved when she was 16. The romance didn’t last long as the outbreak of the Dominion War sent Simone and her family back to Venteris Prime, but she kept in touch with him and his family. When the war ended in 2375, Simone decided to visit him on Earth and while there took a tour of the Starfleet Academy campus. Though her family expected her to go into the family business with the Venteris Corporation, Simone had become enamoured with the idea of exploration and joining Starfleet and wanted to distance herself from Venteris. Eventually she managed to convince her mother to allow her to follow her dreams and, with a recommendation from her friend’s father, was allowed to take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. While at the Academy, Simone pursued the command track but she put her political science education to good use and complimented it with scientific and diplomatic subjects. After graduating from Starfleet Academy in 2379, Simone was assigned as a Diplomatic Officer aboard the Galaxy-class USS Heyerdahl-A, which was tasked with maintaining stability along the increasingly unstable Romulan border region. Her skills were frequently put to the test as she was required to oversee negotiations with Romulan representatives as well as deal with Federation delegates and local authorities of colonies affected by the upheaval. In 2387, following the aftermath of the Romulan Supernova and Heyerdahl's reassignment to the Federation interior, Simone needed something different. Seeking a change of scenery and to reconnect with her Risian roots through her paternal grandparent, she requested and was granted a transfer to the Federation embassy on Risa as Chief Diplomatic Officer. With a sizable Risian minority population on her homeworld of Venteris Prime, the popular resort planet held a connection to her heritage. She served here for five years, assisting the many ambassadors and foreign dignitaries that cycled through. However, rising tensions from the Romulan Imperial State, independent warlords in the late 2380s and the reprioritization of Starfleet support for border colonies led to Simone's reassignment in 2392 as Diplomatic Officer and First Officer aboard the Intrepid-class USS Vespertine. She spent nearly a decade aboard this vessel, helping negotiate complex situations arising from the Romulan diaspora and the dividing of the remaining Star Empire. Her lengthy experience working the diplomatic front lines of the post-supernova fallout made Simone a valuable advisor. In 2401 she accepted her current position as Executive Officer of Outpost 915, overseeing day-to-day operations of this newly reclaimed Starfleet Outpost located in a region along the former Federation-Romulan Neutral Zone. |
